John G. Newport

Over more than 25 years Mr. Newport has developed an exceptional reputation in the workers’ compensation legal community.  He is an individual who has become well know for his ability to swiftly size up even the most complex workers’ compensation case and deliver a sold response on behalf of his client.

From the earliest days of his practice up to the present time, he has acquired particular expertise in the defense of public entities including both governmental client as well as school districts.  This includes mastering the intricate and unique rules associated with claims of such employees and the coordination of the handling of such claims with claims for disability retirements, disability discrimination, wrongful discharge and willful misconduct.

Mr. Newport graduated from San Francisco State University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English/Literature and thereafter enrolled in an graduated from Pepperdine University School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree in 1976.  He was admitted to the California State Bar in that year and has been a member of the Workers’ Compensation Section of the Association since that time.

Mr. Newport served in the United States Navy from 1968 through 1970 as a Commissioned Officer and then went to work for the State Compensation Insurance Fund as a Safety Engineer where he worked while attending law school.  In 1976, upon his admission to the Bar, he became a staff attorney with the State Compensation Insurance Fund and worked there for a period of three years before becoming an associate with Kegel, Tobin & Hamrick. Thereafter, he remained in private practice through the present time both as a sole practitioner and in law partnerships.

In the year 2001, our firm was very pleased to work out an association arrangement with Mr. Newport’s law practice that permits both firms to more effectively provide legal services to our clients.  Mr. Newport’s law practice is centered in the Long Beach area and with this association, our firm becomes a strong presence in that legal venue.  Likewise, with regard to the cases handled by Mr. Newport in other areas of Los Angeles County and in Orange County, he is assisted by the presence of Glendale and Orange offices.
